Outreach Programs


The Department of Physics at IIT Palakkad is actively involved in the science outreach initiatives of the Institute. Some of the activities are as follows.

The members of the Department conducts sessions at the Science Quest and CRYSTAL Residential Summar Camp organized every year for young children at different levels in schools of Kerala. See the details of the program conducted in 2022 here.

Quizzes and demonstration of Physics experiments are conducted by the members of the Department for the celebration of Institute Open Day and National Science Day. See the photos of the National Science Day program of 2023 here.

Faculty members of the Department, having diverse areas of expertise, take part in in the Faculty Development Programs by offering technical sessions on focussed topics.

Science Quest and CRYSTAL 2022

In the last Science Quest and the CRYSTAL program in May 2022, Dr. Prithvi Narayan, Dr. Amit Kumar Pal, and Dr. Projjwal Banerjee gave overviews of respectively the large-hadron colider, quantum technologies, and the origin of the universe, to the participants of the program. Dr. Jayakumar Balakrishnan, Dr. Bibhu Ranjan Sarangi, Dr. Vishwas Venkatesh, and Dr. Soham Manni took charge of intriguing the young minds with demonstration of easy but fun experiments. Also, the research scholars of the Department, under the supervision of Dr. Kusum Dhochak, organized a science quiz for the junior batches from schools. More details of the events can be found here.

National Science Day 2023

On the February 28, 2023, the National Scince Day, the Department of Physics, along with the Department of Chemistry, organized a day-long program for the childrens from schools around Palakkad to kindle their curiocity towards the wonders of basic science. The program began with the address of Prof. A. Sheshadri Sekhar, Director, IIT Palakkad, towards the attendees, followed by a presentation by Dr. Jayakumar Balakrishnan on C. V. Raman and the Raman effect, and the demonstration and explanation of a number of experiments by Dr. Jayakumar Balakrishnan, Dr. Bibhu Ranjan Sarangi, Dr. Soham Manni, Dr. Vishwas V., and Dr. Mayarani M. from the Department of Physics. Seminars and Colloquium


The Department organizes regular seminars and colloquiums by experts of relevant fields in order to widen the horizon of the members of the Department. A bi-weekly Journal Club is also run by the Research Scholars of the Department, where they present contemporary topics on different areas in Physics.

Departmental Symposium


The Department of Physics organizes yearly in-house symposium where the members of the Department showcase the exciting research being done by them. The symposium series started in 2020, and was paused due to the pandemic. It has been restarted from 2022 in a larger scale.

Recent Activities

The 2022 edition of the Departmental Symposium was held on May 21, 2022, which constituted of talks and posters from the members of the Department, along with a keynote adress by Prof. Chandan Dasgupta, Department of Physics, IISc Bangalore on Living Glass: Active Matter at High Densities.
