Programs
MSc Program
The Department runs a two-years Masters programme in Physics that started in August, 2019. It offers advanced theoretical as well as experimental training in Physics to students interested to pursue a career in science and technology. Along with the core courses in Physics, the programme includes a set of elective courses designed specifically in accordance with the current world-wide trends of research in different streams in Physics. It also provides opportunity to the students to take up, as a part of the course, short-term as well as extended projects on contemporary topics in different areas of the subject so that they can have a flavour of cutting edge research.
Eligibility criteria and other information
Admission to the M.Sc course in Physics will be offered to those who have qualified in the Joint Admission Test for Masters in Physics (JAM - Physics). The candidates qualifying in JAM will have to satisfy the eligibility requirement for admission into the M.Sc in Physics programme at IIT Palakkad (for more details, see the PG Admission Portal). All candidates admitted through JAM should have a valid Bachelor's degree, while there is no restrictions at 10+2 level.

MS and PhD Programs
The members of the Department of Physics at IIT Palakkad are engaged in cutting edge research in different domains of Physics, both theoretical as well as experimental, that spans over Quantum Physics, Theoretical Astrophysics, String Theory, Soft Matter Physics, Experimental Biophysics, and Theoretical as well as Experimental Condensed Matter Physics.
PhD Program
The Ph.D programme offered by the Department of Physics started in July 2017, and currently includes more than 25 Research Scholars pursuing research in several contemporary topics. PhD entrance examinations and interviews are usually conducted twice a year, in July and and in December. Candidates having a Master's degree in Engineering/Technology/Sciences with good academic record and valid GATE score or UGC/ CSIR-JRF/ LS/ NBHM/ INSPIRE/ JEST or other similar National Level Fellowships or equivalent qualifications in the relevant area can apply (for more details and news on open positions, see the Research Admission Portal). Usually selection of candidates occur based on their performance on a PhD entrance examination, followed by an interview.
Upgradation to MS by Research/PhD Programs
MSc Students of IIT Palakkad also have the opportunity to upgrade to either the MS by Research, or the PhD program during their last semester, depending on their performance in projects supervised by the faculty members of the Department. Usually there are two calls for applications in February/ March every year.
BTech Courses
Apart from these programs, the Department also offers Physics courses in support of the BTech programs run by the different engineering departments of the Institute. The complete list of courses are given below.
PH1030: Physics
PH3601: Quantum Mechanics for Engineers
PH3602: Basics of Quantum Information, Communication, and Computation
PH3603: Electromagnetic Theory
